Tangs

Tangs, including doctorfish, surgeonfish and unicornfish are often a great choice for reef or fish only aquariums. Their active personality, interesting body shapes and bright colors and patterns tend to thrill most aquarium enthusiasts. Tangs are members of the Family Acanthuridae which means thorn tail. This refers to the sharp spines which protrude from each side of their tail. Tangs are found in or near coral reefs in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. These fish tend to do well in reef and fish only marine aquariums. Tangs are often found together in aquariums and in nature. Many types however can be very territorial when new tangs or fishes of similar shape and/or color are presented to the aquarium. It is usually best to add Tangs in groups and when they are younger to prevent aggressive behavior. Tangs are prone to diseases and become much more susceptible when deprived of a diet consisting of plant matter such as macro-algae.
