One of the smaller members of the Lionfish family, the Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish, or Shortfin Lionfish quickly becomes a favorite of new owners. The brilliant stripes that adorn the webbed fins range from light browns to reds and occasionally into black, set against a pale white body. The smaller mature size of only 7 inches, coupled with lower aggression allows for multiple Dwarf Lionfish to be kept in the same enclosure. Collectors frequently house 2 or 3 together in aquariums of at least 50 gallons or larger. Caution should be taken when determining tank mates as they can be moderately aggressive to other species or even juvenile Lionfish. As with most Lionfish, the calm and collected demeanor of the Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish, until feeding time, continues to draw enthusiasts to them.

Niger Triggerfish

Dendrochirus brachypterus typically displays a very active and exciting feeding routine. Described as pets more than just a mere fish, its carnivorous enthusiasm is an enticing aspect of owning a Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish. The natural diet of the Dwarf Lionfish consists of live fish, shrimp, small squid, and krill along the Indo-Pacific reef systems. In captivity, it is a common practice to incorporate a mostly frozen food source to avoid injury to the fish either from the live food or from chasing through a highly decorated underwater environment.
